Should you tune your piano after a move?

Picture
One of the most common questions we get at our shop is whether or not a piano should be tuned after a move. And if so, how long should you wait to let the piano settle into its new position before having the piano re-tuned?.

The simple answer is yes. Almost every move will require your piano to be tuned. This is because the tune in your piano is so precise that any movement that jostles the strings or action of the keys could throw the delicate balance of the tune off.
Fortunately tuning a piano after the event of a move is usually an easy process most piano moving companies know how to safely move a piano without damage and with minimal slip in the tune of your most precious instrument.

Even brand new pianos aren't immune to the requirement of a tune once they are moved from the shop window into your living room. Even if the piano that you played before you bought it was sounding fantastic where it stood in the shop, It will always require a re-tuning once it is moved even across town. These initial re-tunes are usually on the cheaper side of the services that we provide at Fort Worth Piano Tuning because most of the time a piano that is brand new and has recently been in tune won't have much trouble getting back to that state.

One thing that our customers don't think about when moving a piano is about the temperature and humidity in the room that it was positioned in will most likely be different than its destination. This will require the piano, the strings, and action to get used to and be tuned to the temperature and humidity changes. These differences in humidity and temperature can cause the wood frame to swell or contract. This may require multiple visits by the tuner to make sure that the piano is staying in the tune that the tuner left it on initially. This is pretty normal for pianos that are being moved  From one environment to another, say across the country.A piano that was in tune in dry California might need to be worked on for some time before it can hold a tune in humid Florida for instance. Fortunately in Fort Worth, the weather is dry enough that humanity doesn't usually play too much of a factor in keeping or preventing your piano from staying in tune.

Another thing to consider is what the constant temperature is in the room that the piano will be staying in.  Does this room have an air conditioning unit? Does the space have a lot of air coming in from outside, perhaps from an open window? Does the temperature in the room that it stays in change frequently? If the temperature that the room is that the piano is going to stay in does change frequently you might think about changing the location that the piano will be in or changing the conditions of the space so that the temperatures can stay at an even level.

Once you have your piano in the place that you wanted to be in we recommend that having a general pitch adjustment voicing or repair a few months after the initial tune. This is to ensure that your piano is keeping a tune and that you are satisfied with the service that we provided to your instrument.
