Piano Voicing

If you are new to the world of instrument tuning, and pianos, in particular, you might have never heard of piano voicing. When you have played the piano for some time your ear will become very good at detecting what is called “disjointed notes”. Pianos, unlike almost all other instruments, are made up of thousands of moving parts. More like a byzantine machine than most instruments, the piano call falls out of tune in almost a thousand ways. The skills need to bring all of these parts back into working and perfect alignment is a skill that takes years, sometimes decades to master. Once your piano hearing skills improve you are going to want your piano to not only be in tune but have a sound that makes sense in the context of its own unique pitch, that requires a master technician to bring out the voice of a specific piano. This job is called Piano Voicing

Getting the tone that would be optimal for a piano means getting the hammers to all work just like each other. This is the trade of a master piano technician. At Fort Worth Piano Tuning, we employ master tuning professionals that can provide our customers with concert-quality tuning for their pianos.

Voicing begins with making sure that all of the moving parts of the instrument are working at their best. This is known as action. You want an acoustic piano tuned and regulated well before beginning the process of voicing. The hammers must strike the string squarely, the action is well adjusted and the piano is in a fine-tuned state. In many cases, a piano's warm sound is desired to be executed. The warm sound comes from the hammer felt be soft, but not too soft. To accomplish this a needle tool is used to prick the hammers skillfully so that just the right amount of muffle is given to the note, producing a softened sound. This process is done throughout the entire instrument. The reason this is done so carefully is that the technician wants to make sure not to pierce the harder, lower layer of felt that is used to produce the tone that is more powerful. When done in the proper way this process will give the piano a lot of expressions when played softly, but still, be able to give the powerful tones that fill up a concert hall when the musician needs it.

Voicing can also be known as tone regulation because this process is often misunderstood, and because of this, it is even more often done incorrectly. You want to make sure that you have a master technician in your employ before you go ahead and attempt to voice or tone correct an acoustic piano. Most piano owners will never need their piano to be voiced properly by a master technician. This process is mostly used for professional musicians, not the piano you wear in most living rooms. Although most people will not need a piano voicing for their personal instrument if you do find yourself the owner of a more expensive instrument such as a Brusendorff piano or other high-end acoustic instruments, piano voicing and tone regulation are hugely important for these more refined pianos.

The 1st thing our tuner will look at will be the hammer blow distance and that is the distance from the hammer to the string when the hammer is at the resting position.
The next thing that they would look at in regulation is the cap stance by taking the key out they can get a good look at the cab stands at the end of the key. This step is important in regulating lost motion. It wants to be set so that it does not have excess motion.
The next part of regulation is setting the white key height and in order to do this the tuner will Make sure that when the key is pressed down the top of the key does not come all the way down to the key slip while at the same time making sure the key is not so high that you can't lift the key slightly.
