Wood
Most pianos have a wood finished with a light lacquer or varnish to protect it from the elements.
  • First, use a light duster to gently remove dust from the surface of the wood. Dust can scratch your wood microscopically if you go right into rubbing household cleaners into it right away. Removing the dust gives you a clean area to work with.
  • Next, if you don't know your pianos particular finish, consult the store or person you bought it from or a piano store that would know your pianos make and year. The reason for this is that on rare occasions some pianos can not take certain brands of wax and polish well and you could end up damaging your instrument.
  • In most cases just regular light dusting will be sufficient for weekly cleaning.
  • Avoid using store bought chemical- impregnated wipes as their chemicals can be harmful to your pianos wood finish

The Keyboard
Your keyboard needs to stay cleans so that it can continue to shine and invite people to sit down and “tickle the ivories”. But more than just esthetics, keys that get overly dusty can get gunk build up between them and can actually affect the playing experience. Here’s some quick tips to keep your keyboard shining on:
  • Gently wipe the keys using a soft microfiber cloth. Remember to use a separate cloth than the one you used to wipe the piano finish.
  • If the dirty is noticeable to the naked eye, dampen the cloth in a diluted and neutral cleaning solution. Using this wiping method only after wringing out the cloth well so that it is damp but not wet.
  • Be careful not to use any alcohol based solution such and rubbing alcohol or or denatured alcohol these cleaners can cause cracking in the keys.
  • To maintain the luster and shine of your keyboard, try and always play with clean hands. Washing your hands before you play is always a good practice.

So there you have it! Piano care doesn't have to be a pain. With regular maintenance and some simple know how you can keep you instrumental looking new and inviting for years to come. With most acoustic pianos taking up a fairly large area of the room, we always want to keep them looking sharp. Whether is a vertical or a grand, you can use these techniques with great results.
