A-440

Picture
A-440  Is a term for a standard pitch in piano tuning. It is very common for an entire piano to fall slightly out of tune In just a few years. Because the higher treble notes are tensor and stretched tighter they are usually the first ones to go, which causes a lowering of the pitch. Because the strings of the piano like to fall back into where they have been for many years an A-440 tuning can not be done in just one day. Especially if the piano has been out of tune for some time. It is common to have to go back over multiple days in raise or lower the tension in the wire in order to get the wire used to the new tension of this standard tuning. Pianos that are tuned regularly get used to the tension of being in A-440.
here at Fort Worth Piano Tuning we recommend downloading and app on your phone to check your tune periodically because although the piano can sound good the the ear it is very common for the pitch to drop uniformly throughout the piano and it would be very hard to distinguish until you tried to play with other instruments. Regular tuning of the piano is the best way to allow your instrument to maintain its tune for longer periods of time. This maintenance is really important because if a piano falls out of tune for a long enough period of time it could take several sessions of tuning over the course of a few days to get the piano to hold its tune

But where did A-440 come from? And why is it now the standard for tuning a piano?
Sound is a series of vibrations that go through the air. The vibration of a string of a piano does so at a particular number of cycles per second. If we were to be able to record a video of a strung instruments string and slow that video down we would be able to see that the string is vibrating back and forth a certain number of times per second. The vibration of the string also vibrates the air around it in the same way and when that air hits your eardrum, the drum vibrates in tandem with the air and therefore string creating the sound we hear.
The A above middle C produces and vibration at 440 cycles per second.that means that the string is moving back and forth 440 every second.in fact the entire piano is designed around that A above middle C and the rest of the strings are all tuned around that one note. The reason is because over the centuries that's what people have decided sounds best. Now, some people like to tune their string instruments higher than A-440 to A-442 or even as high as A- 444, believing that it produces a more bright or radiant sound. But, A-440 is still considered the standard tuning around the world.

This comes in handy especially when you want to play with an accompaniment of other instruments and even vocalists. Some instruments have the ability to change their tuning up or down but others like brass instruments don't have that ability at all.so thats why having a standard around the world for A-440 is helpful for people who want to know for sure that the tuning of their piano is going to be able to work well with other instruments.
